Government Does Not Want To Legalise Bigamy – VP
Vice President Mutale Nalumango has dispelled rumours circulating on social media that the government is planning to legalise bigamy.
Speaking yesterday at a Reformed Church of Zambia (RCZ) service in Chongwe, Ms Nalumango said the government would never consider such a law because Zambia is a Christian nation and will always remain that way.
The Vice President clarified that the government is considering reforms to remove bigamy from the penal code but to prohibit it in the marriage act, which would still mean that bigamous relationships have no legal standing.
“This is a just proposal to remove bigamy from the Penal code but leave it in the marriage Act, it is said that opposition political leaders have twisted it to suit their minds,” she explained.
During her service, Ms Nalumango praised the RCZ for its work supporting the government’s efforts in education and healthcare. She also commended the church for preaching a message of love and peace to all Zambians.
RCZ synod moderator Ackson Banda said the church was a nonpartisan organisation but was happy to work with the government of the day in order to best serve the Zambian people.
He called on the Vice President to ensure that the government continues to make laws that are in line with “God’s will as the country is a Christian nation”.
