President Hichilema Signs MoUs With Kenya
President Hakainde Hichilema has overseen the signing of several memoranda of understanding (MoU) with Kenya which are aimed at enhancing tourism partnerships between Zambia and the East African nation, as well as promoting trade, investment, and mutual development.
Among the MoU’s signed were provisions for greater cooperation between the Zambia Development Agency and the Kenya Investment Authority, as well as partnerships between the Enhanced Zambia Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (ZIDIS) and the Foreign Service Academy Institute of Kenya (FSI).
The President arrived in Nairobi at midday on Wednesday for a series of meetings with his Kenyan counterpart Uhuru Kenyatta. He is accompanied by the Minister for Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga.
Following a meeting with President Kenyatta yesterday, President Hichilema wrote on his Facebook page, “The discussions focused on trade and investment in potential areas of tourism and agriculture among others.”
“Zambia and Kenya have many similarities which we intend to maximise on with the view of growing our economies,” he added.
Since taking office, the President has placed a great deal of emphasis on increasing regional cooperation with Zambia’s neighbours. In May, the government signed a series of MoU’s with the Democratic Republic of Congo aimed at establishing a joint value chain for the production of batteries for electric vehicles. Similar trade and cooperation agreements were also signed with Rwanda during a visit by President Paul Kagame to Zambia in April.
