President Hichilema Urges Kwacha Residents To Back UPND In By-Election

President Hakainde Hichilema has encouraged voters in Kwacha constituency to support United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Charles Mulenga in Thursday’s by-election.

On Monday the President took part in door-to-door campaigning around the constituency, urging residents to come out and vote for Mr Mulenga and the UPND.

“Do not be lied to, we are fixing what was destroyed and broken one by one. Give me Mulenga here in Kwacha and I will show you. You voted for peace, law and order and we have given that. You voted change. We said we will fix the economy and we are doing that,” he said.

President Hichilema was greeted by large crowds of people as he made his way through Kwacha. Writing later on his Facebook page, the President said meeting with residents helped his government to keep “our ears on the ground and eyes on the ball”.

While in the constituency, HH noted a number of local issues that needed addressing, such as erratic water supplies, dilapidated sewer lines and the issuing of title deeds, as well as the ongoing disputes over Mopani Mines and Konkola Copper Mines.

Mr Mulenga was also busy speaking to the crowds and urged Kwacha residents to vote for him on Thursday to bring forward the constituency’s development.

A by-election was triggered last month after it was revealed that the incumbent MP, Joseph Malanji, did not have a Grade 12 leaving certificate and was therefore ineligible to serve. Mr Malanji appealed his case to the Constitutional Court but the judge moved to nullify the Patriotic Front MP’s seat, triggering a by-election.
