U.S. Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, To Visit Zambia In Next Two Weeks

Janet Yellen, United States Treasury Secretary, is due to visit Zambia in the next two weeks in a bid to strengthen ties with the country.

Ms Yellen will also visit Senegal and South Africa during her visit.

The visit comes following the U.S Africa Leaders’ Summit where President Joe Biden announced that he would facilitate more than $15 billion in trade and investment deals.

He stated that the U.S. was “all in” in helping facilitate investment and trade in the continent.

During her trip, the Treasury Secretary will meet with governments and private entities to discuss issues such as energy, food, security, debt and infrastructure.

Her visit to Zambia will coincide with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, who will also be visiting at the time.

During her time in Zambia, Ms Yellen will visit a distribution centre run by US firm, Mylan Labs. The firm work to allocate anti-malaria treatments.

Additionally, she will meet with other heads of business from the American Chambers of Commerce during her visit.

The trip is set to cement longstanding U.S. ties to African nations whilst acting as a countermeasure to China’s increasing prevalence in the region, as the visit comes after China’s foreign minister, Qin Gang, began his tour of Africa.

President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Trade Representative Katherine Tai, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo will also be travelling to Africa this year.
