UN Representative Commends Human Rights Progress

The Permanent Representative to the UN from Zambia, Chola Milambo, has praised the country’s progress in the promotion of human rights following the abolition of the death penalty.

On December 23rd Zambia became the 25th African nation to abolish the death penalty.

Penal Code Amendment Bill number 25, signed by President Hichilema, marks a historic moment for the country. Speaking at the signing of the legislation, Hichilema emphasised that the death penalty undermines human dignity and the sanctity of life.

Milambo praised the “strong program of economic and governance reforms” and the “bold steps” taken towards “transformative change”. Milambo commented that “uplifting human rights is a key point in this regard.”

The New Dawn administration has repealed other outdated laws since coming to power. Notably, laws have been repealed that made it a criminal office to defame the President.

The UN representative also committed to supporting all future UN resolutions regarding the global abolition of the death penalty.
