UPND claims victory in Kawambwa by-election
The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) is celebrating its victory in the Kawambwa Council chairperson by-election, calling it evidence of the party's rising popularity in Luapula Province.
Sports, Youth and Arts Minister Elvis Nkandu, who played a key role in campaigning for the UPND candidate, acknowledged the challenges facing residents of Kawambwa District and Luapula Province, assuring that the government is working to address these issues.
Following the announcement of results, Nkandu issued a warning to Socialist Party President Fred Mmembe, cautioning him against the premature announcement of election results.
Transport Minister Frank Tayali highlighted the peaceful nature of the by-election, describing it as a testament to the expanding democratic space under the New Dawn government. He noted that competing political parties were able to campaign without incidents of violence or intimidation.
Science and Technology Minister Felix Mutati also commended the people of Kawambwa for conducting a peaceful election while celebrating the UPND's victory. Small and Medium Enterprise Minister Elias Mubanga characterised the result as a significant milestone in the party's expansion into the northern regions, suggesting it demonstrates growing support for UPND's development agenda in Luapula Province.
However, the Socialist Party has contested the outcome. The party's Mobilisation Secretary, Kelvin Kaunda, maintains that his party actually won the election, while asserting that the Socialist Party remains the country's most organised opposition force.
