Zambia Climbs Mo Ibrahim Governance Index

Zambia has once again improved its score in the Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG) which assesses the quality of governance across 54 countries in Africa. The latest rankings released are for 2023 and score Zambia at 56.6 out of 100.

Zambia’s score is higher than the African average of 49.3, as well as the regional average for Southern Africa, which stands at 54.6. As a result Zambia ranks 17th on the continent.

Prior to 2021 Zambia had seen a decrease in its score, from 53.1 in 2014 to 50.6 in 2020. However, in 2023 the score reached an all time high of 56.5. It scored highest in the category of security and rule of law, but continues to score lower on the foundations for economic opportunity.

Among the top performers in Africa and the Seychelles, Mauritius and Cabo Verde, with the worst performed listed as Eritrea, Somalia and South Sudan.
