Civil Servants to Receive K500 Salary Increase

Civil Servants have been awarded a salary increment of 500 kwacha across all departments, effective January 1st, 2025.

Announcing the development at a media briefing, Union Representative and Team leader Joy Beene announced that 23 Unions and the government came to an agreement on the basic salary increase after holding negotiations for improved salaries and conditions of service.

Speaking on behalf of the 23 public workers' Unions, Mr Beene acknowledged that the increment may not entirely represent the members' wishes, saying, “As unions, we acknowledge that this may not be the best that our members wanted; however, this was the best compromise between the unions and the government.”

Mr Beene explained that the Unions decided to reach a compromise due to the country's current economic challenges.

Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) also reported that the transport allowance for public workers living with disabilities had been increased from 20 to 35 per cent of the basic salary, effective January 1st, 2025.

As Mr Beene pointed out, this is the first salary increase specifically for members with disabilities in ten years.
Other allowances that have been increased for public workers include the meal allowance, which has been increased from K130 to K150, and the repatriation allowance, which has been increased by K1,300, effective January 1st, 2025.

The salary increase is similar to last year’s when the government awarded civil servants a 550 kwacha increase.
