China to Help End Power Deficit

The Chinese government says it is working on ways to help Zambia tackle its current energy shortage, brought on by a protracted period of drought.

China’s Ambassador to Lusaka, Han Jing, says Beijing will host a special ‘Zambia Power Development Forum’ at the sidelines of the upcoming Forum on China-Africa cooperation (FOCAC), which runs from 4 - 6 September.

Mr Han said Beijing was keen to help Zambia alleviate the impact of the power shortage and pointed to China’s record of constructing and upgrading over 66,000km of power transmission lines, as well as power generation facilities.

President Hichilema is expected to attend both the FOCAC and Zambia Power Development Forum, bringing together stakeholders from China’s energy and finance industries to identify potential solutions.
