HH: Global conflicts felt across Africa
President Hakainde Hichilema has warned that ongoing global conflicts are having far-reaching consequences across Africa, with many nations grappling with economic instability and rising living costs.
Speaking at the 79th UN General Assembly, President Hichilema, represented by Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe, highlighted the ripple effects of international conflicts on African economies.
On behalf of the President, Haimbe explained how the impact of these conflicts has been felt through disruptions to trade, soaring prices of key commodities such as energy, and increased costs of production.
He pointed out that Zambia, like many developing countries heavily reliant on imports, has not been immune to these challenges. The President stressed that the resulting economic pressures have led to a significant increase in the cost of living for ordinary citizens.
In his address to world leaders, Hichilema called for a concerted effort to tackle the root causes of global conflicts, arguing it was crucial to address the fundamental causes and structural drivers of conflict, including the need for robust peace-building initiatives.
The theme for this year’s General Debate was: “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”
