Zambia Chinese Association Donate to Flood Affected Families

The government responded swiftly to the recent floods in Lusaka, offering rental relief worth over one million Kwacha to 180 affected families.

Vice President Mutale Nalumango told reporters yesterday that no more flood-affected families remain in camps in Lusaka following the rental relief provided by the government.

Nalumongo’s announcement came as she received a donation worth over 1.2 million Kwacha from the Zambia-Chinese Association on behalf of Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) in Lusaka.

“We are grateful to receive goods today worth over 1 million Kwacha as well as 200,00 Kwacha in cash. It will go a long long way” said the Vice President, expressing gratitude to the Association and the Chinese government for their continued support to Zambia in times of need.

“Issues of Climate Change have affected everyone. We have seen floods in China too, but that has not stopped you from helping Zambia. You have always stood by us during times of need, such as COVID-19, Cholera and the drought. We are grateful,” Nalumango continued.

At the handover, Association President Zhang Jian told attendees that over 60 Chinese enterprises and expatriates in Zambia contributed to the donation.

Jian explained that the Association launched an emergency fundraising initiative following a call from the Chinese Embassy in Zambia.

“In response to this disaster, we promptly launched a donation initiative, which was met with overwhelming support. Within just four days, we managed to raise over 1.2 million Kwacha in cash and relief supplies,” said the Association President.

The food supplies donated include meals, cooking oil and rice, while blankets, disinfectants, and protective gear are among the non-food items.
