Musokotwane Reasserts Government’s Dedication to Social Welfare Spending

Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane reassured Zambians this week that generous public spending on social programmes remains among the government’s top fiscal priorities.

This, he contends, will ensure that economic growth is inclusive and that no one is left behind in the fight against hunger and poverty.

In particular, he singled out Social Cash Transfer, Cash For Work, the Food Security Pack, and the School Feeding Initiative has successful instances of robust and consequential government action to alleviate the hardship faced by some of society’s poorest members.

This assistance is particularly important during times of crisis such as last year’s drought, the consequences of which would likely have been far more severe without a capable and responsive state.

Dr Musokotwane maintained that fiscal responsibly remains essential, yet was proud of his government’s spending record.

“In March alone, the government disbursed K333.3 million for the Cash for Work Programme, while K200 million was allocated to the Food Security Pack, ensuring continued support for vulnerable households across the country. The President’s vision is clear: economic growth must be people-centred, leaving no one behind. Every ministry must work with dedication to achieve this goal”, the Finance Minister said.

In the current geopolitical climate, development aid spending is in decline and thus government expenditure takes on a heightened importance. It is welcome news that President Hichilema’s administration is aware of this and remains committed to ensuring a minimum degree of food and financial security for all Zambians.
