Under-20 Team Faces Mozambique In COSAFA Semi-Finals
The national men’s Under-20 team is preparing to defend its title in the 2020 COSAFA Championship in the semi-final against Mozambique.
The team faced Namibia, Comoros and Malawi as part of the Group B fixtures before advancing in the competition. So far the team has enjoyed a good run winning all the Group B matches with a 1-0 victory against Namibia, followed by 2-0 victories over Comoros and Malawi.
Mozambique also remain unbeaten in the competition, having secured wins against Lesotho and Zimbabwe in Group A. However, the Young Mambas ended their group matches with a goalless draw against hosts South Africa.
The match, scheduled for 1530 hours today, will be broadcast live on SuperSport. It will also be available to stream online at www.cosafa.tv. The other semi-final will see the winners of Group C, Angola, take on Namibia at 1200 hours.
The final will take place on December 13.
The 2020 Cosafa championship is being used as a qualifier for the 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations U20 tournament to be held in Mauritania. The stakes are high as the top four sides in Mauritania will secure a place in the 2021 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Indonesia from May 20 to June 12 2021.
Commenting on the match Coach Perry Mutapa stated, "It will be a very tough game, Mozambique is playing well and is yet to lose a game or concede a goal like us, So it will be a meeting of two giants. We just hope the weather will be fine for football because the weather here is very terrible but our mission is to qualify for the Africa cup hence our focus is to win the game.”
“We don't expect anything but to qualify and defend the title,” he continued.
