First Female Football League Launched in Northern Province

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has launched the first women’s football league in Northern Province.

The province’s Women’s Football Representative Madam Beauty Namwawa launched the league in Kasama over the weekend.

Namwawa said that she hoped the introduction of the league would develop women’s football in the area, expressing her confidence that the move will help shape the future of the women’s game at both provincial and national level.

“My appreciation goes to all stakeholders who put together their resources in ensuring that this comes to fruition,” she said.

FAZ Provincial Chairperson, Mwansa Kapyanga, agreed with Namwawa’s comments, adding that the launch of the league in the area is in line with the association’s commitment to develop women’s football at grassroots level.

Women’s football was first introduced by the FAZ in Zambia in 1983, with this decision to create a provincial league in the Northern Province lagging almost 40 years behind the inclusion of women into the sport in Zambia.

In spite of this, introduction of the league is a step towards developing an inclusive and sustainable future for women and girl’s football in the country.

Kapyanga said that 12 teams from across the province have already been selected to participate in the inaugural league, with teams including the Pride Star Girls and Mpaji Queens
