Zesco United Aim For Fourth Straight Win Benchmark
Zesco United on Thursday hope to become the second team to win four successive league games this season as they bid retain their number one status.
The eight-time FAZ Super Division champions hosts Lumwana Radiants on Thursday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium after collecting three straight games for the first time this season that saw them take a one-point lead heading into the midweek Round 20 fixtures.
Only fourth placed and promoted side Prison Leopards have won four successive league games this term that they recorded over the Christmas period.
Zesco coach Mumamba Numba has demanded that his players must now ensure they display championship character and ensure they keep vice-grip on their number one status from now on.
“Of course if it very important because we are on top of the log and I think we now need to get down to work and stay there until the end of the season,” Numba said.
But Numba warned against underrating fourth from bottom and perennial relegation survivor Lumwana who are managed by ex-Zesco coach Tenant Chembo who guided them to the 2017 league title and also spent eight years there where he rotated as interim boss and first assistant.
The Lumwana game will be the last of four successive games they have played in Ndola before visiting Kabwe Warriors this Saturday.
“I think the toughest game of the two (before Kabwe Warriors) and we have to work hard against Lumwana Radiants because these are games that players think they have already won,” Numba said.
“So we need to work hard and psyche the team so that we don’t underrate them because these are teams we need to collect the 3 points if we are to challenge for the title.”
Meanwhile, Zesco are likely to drop to from top spot for at least 24 hours should Zanaco beat Nkwazi away on Wednesday.
Zesco have 34 points, Zanaco 33 points while Lusaka Dynamos have 30 points with the latter hosting Forest Rangers in their Wednesday fixture.
