Shepolopolo To Play Team GB In Friendly Before Olympics
Shepolopolo are due to play Team Great Britain (GB) in a friendly before both sides head to Tokyo for the Olympics this summer.
The match is due to be held at Stoke City’s stadium in England on the 1st July and is a chance for a select group of fans to watch both teams play ahead of their Olympic performances.
As lockdown restrictions have meant that fans have been unable to watch football matches in England, Team GB’s head coach, Hege Riise, has expressed her happiness at the prospect that fans will be able to watch the match at the stadium.
“It has been a long time since supporters have had the opportunity to watch any of the home nations play, and the chance to see our GB squad compete before the [Olympic] Games is a rare occasion indeed,” she said.
Riise also commented on the achievement of Zambia’s female football team at reaching the Olympics, a feat which they had never before achieved.
“We are honoured to welcome Zambia to Great Britain for this match. They have excelled in securing qualification for the Olympics and their achievement and the legacy they will provide will also help grow the women’s game in Zambia.”
Team GB have been drawn to play in Group E against Chile, Japan and Canada. Zambia, Africa’s only female football team qualifying for Tokyo 2020, are due to play The Netherlands, China and Brazil in Group F.
