Copper Queens Off to Great Start in COSAFA Women’s Championship

The Copper Queens are off to a flying start in the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship after their 3-0 win over Angola at the Gelvandale Stadium.

Florence Mwila led the Copper Queens to a standout performance on Thursday, with the majority of debutant footballers coming up to deliver.

In the 29th minute, Ochumba Oseke Lubanji scored with a well-placed strike that had Angola’s defence scrambling. Lungowe Namasiku doubled Zambia’s lead in the 46th minute, taking advantage of a defensive lapse.

Later in the game, Regina Chanda came off the bench and sealed the victory in the 73rd minute, securing a comfortable lead over the Angolan team.

“Its a good independence [Day Anniversary] present for Zambia. We started a bit slow, a bit shaky here and there as a team. Like I said, in my prematch interview, 90% of the players are very new, and playing international football for the first time,” Coach Mwila told a post-match press conference.

”So I think obviously they were trying to settle in here and there, but after talking to them along the way, they settled and we started playing better. I’m happy that they were able to have the confidence to express themselves and we got goal,” she continued

The Copper Queens’ next match comes against Comoros on Saturday night.
