New NGOCC chairperson vows to revitalise Zambia's women's movement

Beauty Katebe, the newly elected Chairperson of the Non-Governmental Gender Organisations Coordinating Council (NGOCC), has committed to reinvigorating Zambia's women's movement, addressing critical challenges that have diminished the organization's impact in recent years.

In her inaugural address at the organisation's 23rd Annual General Meeting, Katebe acknowledged the movement's waning influence and outlined an ambitious plan to restore its former prominence. "The women's movement was once a powerful force, and we must breathe new life into this critical cause," she said.

Katebe's leadership comes at a crucial time, with the NGOCC facing criticism for its reduced effectiveness in addressing women's rights and gender equity.

Key priorities for Katebe include strengthening partnerships with government institutions and grassroots organisations, focusing on critical issues such as girls' education, reproductive health services, and economic empowerment for women in underprivileged communities.

"We need to rebuild trust with women across the country," Katebe said. "From rural farmers to corporate leaders, every woman's voice matters in shaping our future."

Longtime gender activist Mercy Nyirenda welcomed Katebe's leadership, describing her as "the right person to steer this ship back on course." However, Nyirenda cautioned that overcoming past challenges will require collective effort and a clear strategic vision.

The NGOCC's renewed focus comes in response to previous shortcomings, including insufficient support for women leaders and challenges in addressing urgent issues like gender-based violence and representation in leadership roles.
