Government Allocates K10.4 Million to Improve Water Access in Luapula Province
The Zambian government has allocated 10.4 million Kwacha to rehabilitate water reticulation systems in the Kawambwa and Samfya districts of Luapula Province. The initiative aims to address chronic water shortages, ensuring access to clean and safe water for residents and livestock through a piped-water network comprising tanks, pumps, pipes, and troughs. The aid demonstrates the government’s efforts to alleviate poverty by mitigating water challenges and enhancing livelihoods in the regions.
Water Development and Sanitation Minister Collins Nzovu explained to ZNBC News today in Lusaka that the two districts often face challenges accessing safe and clean water, and often people go for days without the vital resource. Nzovu stated the works are expected to take two months and the contractors, China Gansi Engineering, have already started to mobilise in Kawambwa. The project is a critical intervention to alleviate the struggles felt in the two districts.
The project underscores the government’s commitment to combating the adverse effects of drought and improving water security in vulnerable communities. Officials project that the rehabilitated systems will provide immediate relief to the ongoing drought, supporting livelihoods and fostering sustainable development.
This investment highlights Zambia’s broader efforts to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life in underprivileged areas, aligning with national goals for equitable resource distribution and resilience-building.
