Government Builds 279 New Maternity Annexes
The government has built 279 maternity annexes through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
The news was announced by Local Government Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Nicholas Phiri, who explained this spate of construction occurred between 2022 and 2024.
Phiri also revealed that of the 279 completed maternity annexes, 48 were fully operational and providing services to Zambians. A further 91 annexes are under construction.
According to Phiri, “One of the key challenges that we face is the collaboration between the local authority and the health authorities”.
He pointed to the fact that the majority of completed annexes are not yet operational, explaining that “part of the challenge for those that are not operational is the lack of equipment in these annexes, which is critical to operationalise these structures”.
According to Phiri, the construction of these facilities is in accordance with President Hakainde Hichilema’s directive that all health centres should have a maternity annex.
