DMMU Distributes Relief Maize to 4,000 Households in Mpongwe
The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) in Mpongwe District has distributed 4,000 bags of relief maize to households affected by drought. Each bag weighs 50 kilograms, with 800 bags provided for free to vulnerable households and 3,200 bags distributed under the Food For Work initiative.
Mpongwe District Disaster Risk Management Officer, Justin Chimuka, explained the distribution process. “We have given 800 bags to the most vulnerable households at no cost, while the majority, 3,200 bags, were distributed through the Food For Work programme,” Mr Chimuka stated.
The drought has impacted 16,000 households in the district, with 4,000 households benefiting from the current government relief food programme. Mr Chimuka also revealed plans for further aid. “The second phase of the distribution will commence by the end of this week, reaching an additional 4,000 households,” he disclosed.
The DMMU's efforts are a crucial step in addressing the immediate needs of drought-affected families in Mpongwe, providing essential support and relief during these challenging times.
