Kafue Sugar Company set to generate 40MW from biomass
Kafue Sugar Company is poised to embark on a US$70 million project to produce 40 megawatts of electricity using biomass energy.
The initiative, part of the 'Supporting Preparedness for Article Six Cooperation' (SPARC) project, is backed by the Swedish Energy Agency in collaboration with the Zambian government.
In addition to power generation, the scheme will establish a 2,000-hectare out-grower programme, aimed at empowering the local community.
During a feasibility study tour of Kafue Sugar, SPARC representative Martin Gurien highlighted that the project's benefits extend beyond the company itself. According to Gurien, "This endeavour will not only meet Kafue Sugar's energy needs but also feed surplus power into the National grid".
Senior Chief Shakumbila expressed optimism about the project's potential impact on the region. "We are hopeful that this initiative will significantly enhance the living standards of our local residents," the traditional leader remarked.
The ambitious project marks a significant step towards sustainable energy production in Zambia, potentially serving as a model for future biomass energy initiatives in the country.
