Government Shuts Down Orphanage After Sexual Abuse Reports
The government has shut down an orphanage in Lusaka’s Chudleigh area following allegations of sexual abuse and defilement involving a clergyman who is running the facility.
The unregistered facility, which housed over 60 children, some as young as 3 years old, belongs to God at Work Victory International Church.
Community Development and Social Minister Doreen Mwamba visited the orphanage earlier today following reports from two brave girls that they had been sexually abused.
After seeing the conditions and hearing the children's accounts, the Minister was unable to contain her emotions and broke down in tears.
“We have a girl who has lived at this institution for 23 years. She came when she was 7 years old, and all the years she has been here, she has been sexually abused. This has to come to an end, and it has come to an end today,” said the Minister firmly, demonstrating the government’s zero-tolerance policy for sexual abuse.
“Going forward, we will move with force, determination and dedication to make sure that all the culprits are brought to book,” she continued.
After her visit to the orphanage, Mwamba met with Bishop Davis Banda and his wife. The minister admonished the clergyman for his alleged actions and issued a stern warning to others who may be engaging in similar conduct.
“Are you also aware that you are not allowed to import children from other areas and keep them under your roof? Are you aware? We know that you have been defiling those children, especially the girls,” said Minister Mwamba.
Mr Banda and his wife have been arrested and are in custody, awaiting a court appearance.
