Lungu Receives Report On Police Station Killings
President Lungu has received a full report from Police Inspector General Kakoma Kanganja on the killing of two citizens outside Police Force Headquarters in Lusaka last month.
According to a statement from State House, the president has read the report and subsequently handed it over to the director of public prosecutions .
The report was ordered following the deaths of Nsama Nsama Chipyoka and Joseph Kuanda, who were shot by police while supporting UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema during his questioning at police headquarters.
Following the incident, President Lungu dismissed several senior members of the police force, including Deputy Inspectors General Bonnie Kapeso and Eugene Sibote. He then instructed Inspector General Kanganja to conduct a six month review into reforming the police service.
However, opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema said at the time that these measures would not go far enough, and that an independent commission of inquiry would be needed to investigate the murders properly.
Speaking during his end of year national address, Mr Hichilema called for systematic changes to the police force in order to restore the confidence of Zambian citizens.
“We demand for the reform of police service to make it more user friendly to the citizens - not the cosmetic changes we have seen to date. We also need to demilitarise the Police,” he said.
