HH calls for more research investment by universities
President Hakainde Hichilema has urged both private and public universities in Zambia to increase their investment in research and development. Speaking at the 18th graduation ceremony of Rusangu University in Monze district, the President emphasised the importance of finding solutions to national challenges, particularly those stemming from climate change.
In a statement posted to his Facebook page, the President said, βIn light of the challenges posed by climate change, institutions of higher learning must adapt their curricula to include smart agriculture, green energy, and water conservation sciences.β
Hichilema reaffirmed his administration's commitment to developing an education system that meets the needs of industry, society, and the country as a whole. He also announced plans to improve infrastructure around Rusangu University, promising to tar the 4.5-kilometre road connecting the campus to the Monze-Choma Road junction.
He said that Rusangu University is helping many Zambians acquire skills vital for the nation's development, and therefore improving access to the campus is a priority for the government.
Dr Dorababu Todepalli, Vice Chancellor of Rusangu University, expressed the institution's ongoing commitment to providing high-quality education rooted in Christian values. The ceremony saw 683 students graduate from various fields of study.
Education Minister Douglas Syakalima praised President Hichilema's dedication to education, noting his personal efforts in sponsoring over a million vulnerable individuals to attend school even before assuming the presidency.
