Copper Queens Set to Face USA, Germany and Australia at Olympics
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) congratulated the Copper Queens on their qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The team sealed their place by defeating Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses 3-2 on aggregate in the final qualifying round yesterday.
Despite a 2-1 defeat in the first leg qualifying round, the team went on to win 2-0 on Tuesday to secure their Olympic ticket.
Zambia will join Group B at the Olympics, alongside the USA, Germany, and Australia. While the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco dominated possession, they fell short of securing a victory.
The Copper Queens made their first Olympic appearance in the 2020 Tokyo games. Over the past six years, the team has achieved multiple Africa Cup of Nations qualifications, a World Cup appearance, and a bronze medal at the 2022 WAFCON.
FAZ is now focusing on ensuring that the Copper Queens are prepared for the Olympics, which are set to kick off in July in Paris. Zambia and Nigeria will be the only African football teams competing.
FAZ President, Andrew Kamanga, said “These results help reinvigorate our resolve to invest more in the grassroots football. We have channeled the same level of support to the women’s game as the men’s which has triggered the great success we are witnessing today.”
